The Divertimento Orchestra is an Ottawa based group averaging 60 to 65 amateur musicians. It began in 1984 as a small group playing in someone's basement for their own pleasure and has since evolved into a full fledged symphony. Gordon Slater has conducted the ensemble since 1986.
The orchestra rehearses from the first Thursday after Labour Day to late April or early May and prepares two main programs for that time. Typically, each program is performed twice; on two consecutive evenings in early December and in late April or early May. Recent programs have included Walter Babiak's Movin' in My Heart with the Kanata Choral Society, Borodin's Symphony No. 2 in B minor and Tschaikowsky's Symphony No. 5. In addition smaller groups drawn from the orchestra are involved in performances in Ottawa and the surrounding area.
